A Math Experiment on the Equinox
Long ago in Ptolemaic Egypt, the scholar Eratosthenes of Cyrene served as librarian in the temple of the Muses. He watched over a collection of more than 100,000 papyrus and vellum scrolls that became known as the Great Library of Alexandria.
Eratosthenes loved knowledge, and always strove to discover more. He wanted to create a map of the whole, round world to put in his library. But though merchant caravans traveled long distances across the deserts and sailors explored the distant seas, no one was able to tell the world’s true size.
In this lesson guide, students discover how Eratosthenes measured the size of the Earth, and how they can do the same experiment during the spring or autumn equinox. Also, students can learn about Eratosthenes' Sieve and find all the prime numbers from 1 to 600.

The printable activity guides include brief teacher instructions, but the focus is on the student handout pages, making the activities easy to use in a classroom or homeschool. Many of the printable guides also include math journaling prompts and decorated pages for student writing.
Ebooks come in two formats: DRM-free EPUB file (for reading on your phone or ebook reader) and a PDF (for reading on a tablet). The activity guides come in printable PDF format only.
Either type can stand alone, though we believe they work better together. If you're on a tight budget, the ebook is often the better deal.
