You’ll love these math games because they give your child a strong foundation for mathematical success.

Math You Can Play Combo features two books in one, with 42 kid-tested games that offer a variety of challenges for preschool and school-age learners.

“This book is amazing! We homeschool and begin all our math lessons with a game from this book. My children look forward to math and I’m seeing huge improvements in their abilities.”
—Kaley, online review

Chapters include:

  • Early Counting: Practice subitizing — recognizing small numbers of items at a glance—and learn the number symbols.
  • Childhood Classics: Traditional folk games invite the whole family to enjoy playing with math.
  • Number Bonds: Build a mental picture of the relationships between numbers as you begin to explore addition.
  • Numbers to One Hundred: Develop mental math skills for working with larger numbers. Practice using place value, addition, and subtraction.
  • Mixed Operations: Give mental muscles a workout with games that require number skills and logical thinking.
  • Logic and Probability: Logic games sharpen inductive and deductive thinking skills, while games of chance build an intuition for probability.

Math games prevent math anxiety. Games pump up your child’s mental muscle, reduce the fear of failure, and generate a positive attitude toward mathematics.

So what are you waiting for? Clear off a table, grab a deck of cards, and let's play some math!

Amazing Resource

This book is amazing, we homeschool and begin all our math lessons with a game from this book. My children look forward to math and I’m seeing huge improvements in their abilities. We have played at least 10 games from this book and all of them have been popular among my children. Added bonus is that none of them take specialized equipment and they are easy to understand and execute. As my children grow I will certainly be buying Denise Gaskin’s books that cover more advanced topics.

Math that grows with your children.

This book is amazing. Denise Gaskins explains that math is more than memorizing facts but learning how to see patterns, make connections, and mentally solve problems. Her games provide the experiences necessary to thoroughly explore math in this way.

I love that Gaskins includes activities for a wide range of ages. Even though my kids are twins, they are each at their own level of mathematical understanding. It helps that I can use one book and still be able to meet the needs of both my children. This is a huge plus for homeschooling where so often new text books are required each semester in order to teach new concepts.

A useful and fun assortment of math games

I was looking for games to develop math skills and number sense at a school in Laos. This book perfect. And the games are fun, they'd be a good activity for families at home, as well.

Lots of great games for mental math and mathematical thinking

I read this book as both a homeschooling parent and a math teacher/tutor and homeschool consultant. I would definitely recommend it to homeschoolers and other parents looking to engage their child with math through games. As a math educator, I'd seen some of these games before in other books but was happy to find many more that I'd never played and which use simple materials.

I've tried a couple of them with my own kid and we enjoyed them and will try more, but she is at the upper end of the age/skill range for these games and I think we will get more out of the upcoming books in the series with multiplication and fraction games.

I think my favorite thing about this book is the perspective on teaching math that is communicated. I appreciate the focus on problem solving and logical reasoning, on playfulness, and on communicating and enjoying math together. The games are intended to be fun and to get kids (and adults) thinking and building their number sense, not just to practice a skill. I also enjoyed that the history of the games is given and that there are variations to try for many of them.

I did find the format of this book rather text-dense for a book of math games. This made it harder to look at a game quickly to remind myself of how it is played before/while trying it out with my child. I'm not sure what the solution is...Maybe numbered steps? I did find the illustrations helpful.

I certainly encourage giving this book a try if you are looking for math games for younger children.

Math is fun!

This book is full of great ideas to make math fun and interesting. The games have really helped my sons memorize their basic math facts effortlessly. They look forward to playing these games. I can't wait for the next book in the series!

The Perfect Math Games Book for the Entire Family

I was already a fan of Denise Gaskins' book Let's Play Math, and Math You Can Play Combo certainly did not disappoint, either. In fact, both books are at the top of my math list, along with Family Math and The I Hate Mathematics Book. Although the cover says games for young learners, the beauty of this book is that most of the games can easily be scaled up for older kids, teens, and even adults. My youngest is four and my oldest is 14, and I will be pulling games for all of them out of this book! I appreciate that most of the games are low floor, high ceiling - easy for a child to access, but can be played at a higher level through strategy or slight alterations to the rules. It is jam packed with content. I am teaching a math co-op for homeschoolers this year, and there are enough games and variations in here to last not only this school year, but more to come. These are not drills disguised as games, but activities that require problem solving and strategy as well as calculation. If you are a homeschooler, you need this book. If you are a parent of a reluctant math learner, you need this book. If your family enjoys games played with easy materials such as playing cards, you need this book. Yes, you need this book!

Great for homeschooling

I bought this to use in our homeschool this year with my first grader and my preschooler. We've already been enjoying the games in the Addition and Subtraction book. Most of the games require only a deck of cards and require no preparation on my part. I just pull it up on my Kindle, glance through the directions and we play.

These games are great for using and practicing maths skills in a context ...

These games are great for using and practicing maths skills in a context in which there is some real motivation to do so. I love how they provide opportunities to explore a wide variety of approaches, including number bonds and logical thinking. There is also some thoughtful advice and ideas on mathematics education which I am glad to be reminded of, even though I have read Ms Gaskin's thoughts on these topics many times before on her wonderful blog!

The games use very simple materials, mostly cards and dice, and the few boards that are needed are provided. Each game also has tips on how to customise or extend it - maybe for players of different abilities, or non-competitive options. My children are always pleased, even excited, when I suggest one of these games, even ones that seem terribly simple like Tens Concentration. Sometimes they even ask to play them unprompted!

I have both books on Kindle, and really I would prefer a hard copy as it would be easier to keep handy, mark, and refer to during play. So get the paperbacks if you can!

Excellent resource!

I play a lot of math games with my children. This year I'm playing with even more children because I'm facilitating a math games class at our homeshcool co-op. Denise Gaskins' books are excellent additions to our math games library. I appreciate how encouraging they are, in addition to being chock-full of excellent (and simple!) games to add to our repertoire. I highly recommend both of these titles.
